I started this series last year, did a couple of posts, then forgot about it.
It was supposed to be a series where I pointed out cool songs I'd discovered that were popular with da young people. This is in the UK Top Ten at the moment. It's the best pop song I've heard all year...
I even like the video, which looks like it was filmed in the 80s - old-fashioned rotary telephone and all.

Yes, I like this one too. I have been following the UK Singles Chart for nearly two years now and feel quite au fait with "what the young people are listening to". It's definitely not all bad (but don't get me started on Sabrina Carpenter).
ReplyDeleteThere's still a UK singles chart? Blow me down.........
ReplyDeleteThere is... but it's largely meaningless nonsense as songs stay in there for years based purely on streaming. Currently, Oasis are at #32 and Mr Brightside by the Killers is at #39. Landslide by Fleetwood Mac seems to have been hovering around the Top 50 for about 5 years now.
DeleteNot all meaningless nonsense - it's all very scientific how they weight "sales" of songs depending on it they are bought, downloaded or streamed. I discovered recently that even if someone passes away, like Dolly, it was unlikely her songs would flood the Top Ten despite an awful lot of streaming as there is something called ACR. Seems you need way more plays of an older song to achieve the same “sales”. If a song is older or its numbers decline for three consecutive weeks, the UK chart triggers an Accelerated Chart Ratio (ACR), doubling the requirements to 200 premium or 1,200 free streams per sale, to keep the charts fresh.
ReplyDeleteSo the fact songs like Mr Brightside and Landslide are still consistently there, means they must get an awful lot of listens, all these years later. Big with the kids it seems.
It's still no replacement for the real charts, IMHO.
