The new album by Richard Hawley appears to have gone by without much fanfare, but to me it's another fine example of an artist who's still operating at the peak of his abilities.
After a fiery indie-guitar opening reminiscent of his old band the Longpigs, the album settles down into classic Cash-Orbison mode. After a couple of the listens, many of the tracks sound like old friends from years gone by. It's hard to believe they've just been recorded, you could easily imagine hearing them playing from a crackly old AM radio 30 or 40 years ago.
A definite contender. That opening track is a bit tasty - Richard Hawley letting himself go an electric guitar is a fine sound (there is a touch of Billy Idol meets U2's Vertigo about it, but that is no bad thing)
