Cnut Songs #3: Change The Sheets

As mentioned previously, Sam and I stayed at a famous budget hotel chain while away last week. Really all we needed was a couple of beds, and a bathroom and a kettle... and it's a good job, because that's pretty much all we got. Hotel chains are using the Covid crisis to strip back the service they offer to the bare minimum, so the famous "all you can eat breakfast" has been replaced by a box of cornflakes, cartons of OJ and milk, a flapjack and a dried up pain au chocolat. Sam loved it! I longed for the days of eating so much at the inclusive breakfast bar that I didn't need to eat again all day.

This wasn't the only evidence of stripping back. On arrival, we were told that "due to the pandemic", our rooms wouldn't be cleaned while we were staying... "to avoid us having to touch any of your things". I wonder if it's also to avoid having to pay a cleaner, as the lady on reception appeared to be the one cleaning vacated rooms... in fact, I have a strong feeling there was actually only one member of hotel staff active at any one time, since when she wasn't on the reception desk, she was replaced with a cardboard cut-out holding up a mobile phone number that allowed us to contact her wherever she was in the hotel if we needed her. We'd have to do that via our mobile phone though, as there's no phone in the rooms anymore.

Still, you pay budget, you get budget, I suppose.

I have slightly more sympathy for a colleague of Louise's who booked a luxury break at a 5 Star hotel for him and his wife last week, only to be called up two days before their stay and told he'd have to bring his own bedding due to a "national linen shortage".  It's not actually the sheets that are running out, but the laundries that clean them are suffering shortages and cut-backs due to covid and Brexit.

Three days into this series and I'm already losing the will to shout at the sea anymore.

Cnut Songs #2: Take The Cash!

Last week, Sam and I had a few days away in North Yorkshire, staying in a Travelodge near York, and visiting Fountain's Abbey (above), The Forbidden Corner (highlight of the trip), The National Railway Museum, Jorvik Centre and a few other places of interest. It was a great boys' holiday and the weather held up most of the time. All good, all good. But being the Cnut I am, I couldn't help but get wound up by a few things...

The first I'll mention is when we stopped for tea on Wednesday afternoon at an upmarket burger chain. Luckily we'd booked a table, because it seems in the post-Covid world, you're out of luck if you try to turn up without a booking. A number of people were turned away without one, despite a fair few empty tables.

The last time we went to York was exactly two years earlier, and back in that wonderful pre-Covid age, we didn't pre-book anything. We maybe had to queue a little, but we got into whatever we wanted. This time: no booking, no joy. The most ridiculous example of this was at the Railway Museum where we had pre-booked our visit... but then were told we would also have to pre-book a place on the kids' mini train ride. When we went to the booking desk to do this, we were told they didn't have any free rides for the next three hours. By which time we were pre-booked at our next attraction. It won't be long before we'll have to book to use the toilet... and with advancing years, that'll be a lot of bookings.

But back to the burger restaurant, where we had a pretty good meal... until it came time to pay and I reached for my wallet... only for the waitress to stare in horror at the £20 notes I tried to pull out.

"Oh no! I'm very sorry," she spluttered, "but we're card only. (Insert name of chain here, or just say The Establishment) don't take cash anymore. We are a cashless restaurant."

And here I am, shouting at the sea. The last two years has fast-tracked us into a cashless economy, but call me old-fashioned... I like the paper folding stuff. I like to have some note in my wallet and not pay for everything on card. I like the choice. But now that choice is being taken away from us. And the thing that winds me up the most about this is that there was no warning. No signs, as you'd get in a sandwich shop that didn't have a card machine, so identified themselves from the moment you walked in as a "Cash Only" shop. The expectation that I would pay on card - and that I would be able to - was never in question. But what if I hadn't been able to? What if I didn't have my card on me, or there was nothing left in my account, or I'd cut up my credit cards to stop me spending what I didn't have? Would they still have refused my cash then? It's still legal tender, isn't it? Do they have the right to make that choice for me?

I already feel like this column is in danger of making me sound like an angry Daily Mail reader, but this wasn't the only time this happened during our break. Another establishment also refused to accept payment via a £20 note. "I can't take them any more," the lad behind the counter told me, "I got in trouble the last time I did... have you got anything smaller?"

I'll leave it to the conspiracy theorists to tell you why They don't want us to have cash any more. Me, I'm just lamenting the passing of the old ways. We lose a little more of them every day.

Cnut Songs #1: Shouting At The Sea

Time for a new series, because I seem to have reached the point where Mid-Life Crisis Songs doesn't quite cover everything I want to whinge about. I thought about calling this series Modern Life Is Rubbish, after the Blur album, since it seems to me that (especially in, although not only because of, the post-Covid world), the whole world seems to be going crazy. I also considered calling the feature Meldrew Songs, except as I've probably mentioned before, they used to compare me to Victor Meldrew even back in the 6th Form.

In the end I settled on Cnut Songs, after the legendary king whose name is often spelled Canute, although the naughty schoolboy who still lives somewhere deep within these aching bones (at odds with the grumpy old man who's always been there) prefers the objectionable spoonerism. (Although if you think I'm just doing that as a joke, check iffypedia... Cnut is the official, olde English spelling.)

The story of Cnut carrying his throne down to the sea shore and shouting at the tide to stop coming in is interpreted in different ways. In some tellings, Cnut is an arrogant king trying (and failing) to demonstrate his supreme power over all things. In my preferred interpretation, he's smart enough to know that, despite being king, his power is extremely limited... and trying to stop the unstoppable is the best way to demonstrate his own impotence.

I empathise with this version of Cnut more and more each day. I can scream at the tide of insanity that keeps rolling ever closer... but I know that I have no power to stop it. All I can do is grumble about it here. So that's what I'll do.

I'll start the whinging properly tomorrow. Until then, here's a song with King Canute in it...
