My Top Twenty of 2020: #12

I just like Will Hoge. He makes interesting records, and he hates Trump. This isn't as angry (or, frankly, as good) as last year's POTUS-savaging My American Dream, but The Overthrow at least seems like a wish that finally came true...

Slow dancing with a straw man
With a match and gasoline
Darth Vader with a spray tan
And a girly magazine
Dance little monkeys
See you feasting on the crumbs
It's almost over
Hear them banging on the drums

The emptiness it shows
And I don't believe it
I don't think you know
But here comes the overthrow

Beyond that track, this is a more straightforward Americana record, with songs like Even The River Runs Out Of This Town and Midway Motel treading reassuringly familiar territory. Tiny Little Movies they may be, but they all bear repeated viewings...

My Top Twenty of #2020: #13

I guess you can call this my "Ladies of Americana" post. Four fine albums that I struggled to pick a favourite from, all worthy of merit... so why not give them all a mention?

Courtney Marie Andrews - Old Flowers

I was undecided on Courtney Marie Andrews until this record. It convinced me.

Courtney Marie Andrews - Burlap String

Mary Chapin Carpenter - The Dirt & The Stars

Always good to have MCC back... sadder and angrier than ever.

Mary Chapin Carpenter - Asking For A Friend

Eliza Gilkyson - 2020

I keep coming back to this track, taken from letters written by Woody Guthrie aimed at Fred Trump...

Eliza Gilkyson - Beach Haven

Lucinda Williams - Good Souls

Wait for it, I saved the bleakest for last...

Lucinda Williams - Black Train

I almost put this post to bed, and then I remembered the best of the bunch. Gretchen Peters recorded an album of songs written by Mickey (Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In) Newbury. And every one's a belter...

My Top Twenty of 2020: #14

Sometimes I wonder why anyone continues to read this blog. All I do these days is moan.

I'll try to keep the moaning to a minimum this week, and just focus on the music.

Smog man Bill Callahan brought out another new album this year, and it was very Bill Callahan. If you like Bill Callahan, you will like Gold Record.

Sometimes I wonder why I never made it as a record reviewer...

English rockers, all the money goes right up their nose
While Ry just smiles
And tries another difficult yoga pose

Saturday Snapshots #167 - The Answers

I still have no internet, by the way. This week's posts were written off-line then uploaded in one block to cut down on tethering charges. This is why I haven't popped over to read any of your blogs recently. My apologies. I will catch up. They say we will have internet week commencing the 21st. I'm not holding my breath.

Smoke some fags and play some pool
Pretend you never went to school...
...and then come back here tomorrow morning for the answers.
