ABC #1
One year before the future stars of Sheffield got their act together, this ABC released a single single on Oval Records in 1979. No further information can be found on the interweb about these guys, and Oval released a lot of records from other parts of the world that weren't available in the UK, so they could have come from anywhere.
ABC #2
Former fanzine writer Martin Fry recruited members of the band Vice Versa (after interviewing them) for his own pop project, and the rest is history. Eventually they roped in the talents of one Trevor Horn on the production desk, and they ended up with a few of the greatest pop songs of the 80s...
Yippie aiy yippee yay!
(The) ABC #3
Russian indie-pop from 2016, taking the definite article (which is allowed on Namesakes).
ABC #4
"Progressive psychedelic trance" from Italy in the last decade. Not really my bag at all, but we're a broad church.
ABC #5
Hungarian rapper. Not unlistenable.
I'm hoping that the Sheffield lads score an easy win this week... but you never can tell.
Given that the Lexicon Of Love is the finest pure pop album ever released I can't see anyone else coming close #2, I nevertheless i shall listen to the others
ReplyDelete#2 by a country mile although #1 and #3 are not bad.
ReplyDelete#2. The other tracks I would not listen to again
ReplyDelete#2 by far the best of the bunch, from the era of wacky videos for MTV.
ReplyDelete#1 not bad but can’t place where they might be from. #5 sounds the kind of thing that might pop up on Eurovision.

Extensive research reveals that #1 were English and included alumni from the likes of The Groundhogs, Grand Slam, Swampfox and Limey (only one of which I have ever heard of). ABC appears about two-thirds of the way down this lengthy article by the bass player: https://www.manchesterbeat.com/index.php/my-story/david-bowker
ReplyDeleteObviously #2 are miles ahead but I'm looking forward to Grand Slam featuring in a future edition. According to Discogs there are at least 20 of them.
Thank you, Ernie. You're better at research than me.
DeleteWell I tried to be a contrarian, but #2 takes this round by severals length.
ReplyDeleteThe other options I'm not sure are even at the same racetrack ...
