Snapshots #286: A Top Ten Fool Songs

Don't laugh at me because I'm a fool... clearly I didn't fool any of you by suggesting that yesterday's Snapshots had nothing to do with the date on the calendar. You all have far too much Wisdom...

Here are ten foolish tunes...

10. Stone, Partridge, Lighthouse.

They're all families.

Family - No Mule's Fool

9. Long in the tooth.

The wisdom tooth comes with age...

Norman Wisdom - Don't Laugh at Me 'Cause I'm a Fool

Or you could have had...

Norman Wisdom - Wisdom Of A Fool

Or...

Norman Wisdom - What Kind Of Fool

Or a load more, to be honest. Take your pick.

8. Reverend Green hits the Southern Comfort.

Al Green meets Matthews Southern Comfort...

Al Matthews was the actor who played Gunnery Sergeant Apone in the movie Aliens... and Benny's dad in Grange Hill. He was also a Radio 1 DJ for a time, and hit the UK Top 20 in 1975 with this...

Al Matthews - Fool

7. The camera surely holds the answer.

The camERA SUREly...

Erasure - Ship Of Fools

6. Cowboy King on a windy beach.

The king of the cowboys was Roy Rogers. If he was on a windy beach, he'd be getting covered in sand.

Sandy Rogers - Fool For Love

One from the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack, if you think you've heard it before.

5. No Jacket required. So good they named him twice.

This is the lead singer of My Morning Jacket. But here, he is solo. And Jim James is the same name twice.

Jim James - Just A Fool

4. Fatboy in the leaves of grass.

Fatboy Slim + Walt Whitman =

Slim Whitman - I'm A Fool

3. Barry's boa.

Barry White had a pet snake.

Whitesnake - Fool For Your Lovin'

2. Selkirk oboe.

Anagram!

Elkie Brooks - No More The Fool

Or you could have had...

Elkie Brooks - Fool If You Think It's Over

1. Nobody but my sweet baby.

In The Who Who Song, Jackie Wilson sang "Who? Who? Nobody but my sweet baby..."

Meet the new boss...
Same as the old boss

1. The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again

You'd be a fool not to come back for more next Saturday.

Celebrity Jukebox #48: Spencer Tracy

Spencer Tracy’s middle name was Bonaventure. I think we can stop there, can’t we?

No?

He was born in 1900, and appeared in 75 films between 1930 and 1967, the year of his death. He was also the first person to win a Best Actor Oscar two consecutive years running. The only other actor to do that… we won’t mention, because he brings me out in hives. Let’s just say he’s no Spencer Tracy.

Like Cary Grant, Spencer Tracy enjoys international renown, even today. So let’s start our brief journey through his musical mentions in Sweden.

Bo Sundström is the lead singer of Swedish pop-jazz band Bo Kaspers Orkester. Today, he’s left the Orkester at home…

Bo Sundström – Spencer Tracy

Jag kommer aldrig bli kär
Jag kommer aldrig bli kär
Jag kommer aldrig bli kär
Som Spencer Tracy

I initially thought this might translate as “I will never be a man like Spencer Tracy”, but it seems “I will never fall in love like Spencer Tracy” seems more likely. Either way, Bo’s probably right.

Meanwhile, in Germany…

Nils Koppruch – Stadt In Angst

Es gibt kein Bett in der ganzen Stadt
Dass Lee Marvin nicht gemietet hat
Verloren in der Wüste und der Arzt ist krank,
Genau wie Spencer Tracey in die Stadt in Angst

My universal translator may be on the fritz here (see what I did there?), but this seems to suggest there’s not a bed in town that Lee Marvin hasn’t rented, that he’s lost in the desert and the doctor is ill, and as a result Spencer Tracy comes to town in fear. Make of that what you will.

No translator needed for The Good Rats, as they hail from Long Island. They have featured on this blog a number of times before, as I’m particularly fond of their song Advertisement In The Voice. This comes from the same album, Ratcity In Blue…

The Good Rats – Tough Guys

Tough guys
Always been my kind of man
Doin' the things that I can't
Tough guys

Let's not ignore
The greatest of all
Ladies and gentlemen
Spencer Tracy!

From Long Island to Long Fin Killie, a band I’ve never heard of before. Apparently they’re Scottish and came along at the height of my musical heyday in the late 90s, so I’m surprised I never stumbled across them after all these years down the mines.

Long Fin Killie – Valentino

And this is why I wish I could be
Just like Spencer Tracy
But I don't have the build or the poise
And I'm a few pounds shy

If I were more like Spencer
I might not carry this handful of broken fingers
Just 'cause I saw Valentino smoking under the streetlight

From Salford, here’s someone we’ve all heard of…

Elkie Brooks – When The Hero Walks Alone

I've been staring at the late show
Instead of holding you
Watching lovers learn to let go
The way that heroes do

Had my heart on Spencer Tracy
But I got Bogart in the cold
It can drive a woman crazy
When the hero walks alone

Now here's a band who didn't make many records, but are still firm favourites with certain parts of the blogosphere...

Tallulah Gosh – Bringing Up Baby

Thinks storms are lovely weather
She says, "What day is it John?"
"What day is it?"
And they begin
To think of them as one person
Really the girl and Spencer Tracy
Cheekbones you could cut
La la la la la la la la la la la

Carlos Perón was a founding member of Yello. He quit to pursue a solo career just before Dieter Meier and Boris Blank hit the big time.

Carlos Perón – Los Alamos

Harold M. Agnew’s elbows
Make a pair of wings for his head
On top of which his hands fold in a clasp
He looks like Spencer Tracy now…

That last line might be familiar to you, as it’s also the title of my favourite Spencer Tracy song, from Deacon Blue’s debut album, Raintown. That's what I'll leave you with today. Thank you for your kind attention.

My Top Ten Don't Cry Songs

Sam isn't a bad kid when it comes to crying. I've heard tell of babies who are much, much worse. But there are times... times when nothing we do will soothe him, when we feel that crushing mix of frustration, guilt and pain which every parent must grow to understand. Still, music has powers to soothe the savage beast, to paraphrase William... Congreve. (Yeah, I thought it was Shakey, too.) Here's ten tunes to do just that...

10. Oasis - Stop Crying Your Heart Out

Every time I include an Oasis song in a Top Ten, an angel loses its wings. This is one of those rare compositions from the monobrowed chuckle brothers that doesn't annoy the jogging bottoms off me. Still... sorry, seraphim.

9. Elkie Brooks - Don't Cry Out Loud

A hit in the US for Melissa Manchester (it was written by Peter Allen and Carole Bayer-Sager), but Elkie's UK hit is a little less Streisand.

8. Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons - Big Girls Don't Cry

Silly boys...

7. The Streets - Dry Your Eyes

I really shouldn't dig Mike Skinner's soppy Ray Winstone Jr. routine... And yet...

6. Guns 'n' Roses - Don't Cry

Never ones to do things by halves, GnR actually released two different versions of this song (the lyrics of the verses were entirely different) as part of the mammoth double album exercise in self-destruction that was Use Your Illusion. This is the alternate version. If you're sad, like me, you might want to compare the two. They blew the video budget on the first version though.

5. Richard Hawley - Don't You Cry

Epic (10 & 1/2 minutes) sadness from the Sheffield Sinatra.

4. The Pretenders - Stop Your Sobbing

Written by Ray Davies (Chrissie Hynde's boyfriend at the time - what a cradle snatcher!) and originally recorded by The Kinks... though the Pretenders made it their own with a little new wave bite. Their debut single - hard to believe it only reached #34 in the charts.

3. Spiritualized - Stop Your Crying

Phil Spector has a lot to answer for.

"Orchestra? Check. Choir? Check. Gratuitous destruction of musical instruments? Check. Kitchen sink? Where's that bloody kitchen sink!?"

2. The Cure - Boys Don't Cry

So, tell me, Mad Bob McMad, why exactly don't boys cry? It can't be for fear of making their eyeliner run...

1. INXS - Baby Don't Cry

Probably my favourite INXS song, a joyously anthemic pop cookie. What U2 might sound like if Bono wasn't such an utter knob.

Which one stops your sobbing?

My Top Ten Summer Rain Songs

Well, we all knew it couldn't last, didn't we...?

10. Ash - Summer Snow

Steady on, Tim, you always have to take these things to an extreme, don't you?

9. ELO -  Summer and Lightning

For Christmas, 1976, Jeff got the BBC Sound Effects: Weather LP.

8. Elkie Brooks - Sunshine After the Rain

The original: much better than the 90s cover.

7. Placebo - English Summer Rain

Good one from the goth-pixie.
Always stays the same, nothing ever changes,
English summer rain seems to last for ages.
6. Peter Gabriel - Red Rain

OK, I realise this is a stretch, but I love the song and that's all it takes to get out my shoehorn.

Warning: do not google search what this song is about. It's by Peter Gabriel... just accept the story behind it will be more mental than anything you can imagine.

Don't watch the scary video either.

5. Turin  Brakes - Pain Killer (Summer Rain)

Olly and Gale's biggest hit. Great to hear it again.
Leave all this misery behind...
4. Belinda Carlisle - Summer Rain

Another of my unashamed teenage pop crushes. Ah, Belinda...

3. The Alarm - Rain In The Summertime

Some knew them as the Welsh U2. Except: they were good.

2. Bruce Hornsby & The Range - Mandolin Rain

Can't believe I've published over 150 posts on this blog and this is the first time I've been able to include any Bruce Hornsby. Gorgeous stuff.
Running down by the lake shore,
She did love the sound of a summer storm,
Played on the lake like a Mandolin,
Now it's washing her away... once again....
1. Beta Band - Dry The Rain

"I will now sell five copies of The Three E.P.s by The Beta Band", says John Cusack in the film version of Nick Hornby's High Fidelity (which, you will not be surprised to discover, is one of my favourite movies). However, the pedant in me always wants to complain that the version he plays in the shop isn't the one on The Three E.P.s... it's been specially edited for the movie.

Still. Great song.

Which one is sheltering under your umbrella?
