Another Day #16: Russian Superman Day

June 12th is a a national holiday in Russia, commemorating the end of the Soviet Union back in 1990. And if that just makes you think of the WONDERFULNESS done since by that VERY NICE MAN Vladimir Putin then, GOOD FOR YOU.

(This post has been edited to stop the bots reporting me. I don't want to end up in a Siberian Salt Mine, thank you very much. I've got in enough trouble for slagging off Trump all the time.)

Remember what Sting told us - the Russians love their children too!

Do you think that the Russians want war?
These are the sons and the daughters of parents who died in the last one
Do you think that they want to go through that again?
The destruction, the bloodshed, the suffering and pain
In the second world war, out of every three dead, one was Russian
If we try with all of our power
Can we not find a way to peacefully settle our difference?

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Cold War, it's a day to celebrate that strange visitor from another planet who became a symbol of truth, justice and the American Way. Except they don't say that anymore - in fact, about 15 years ago, Superman renounced his American citizenship and now represents "Truth, justice and a better tomorrow". Considering he's still an immigrant, it's a wonder the Tangerine Tosspot hasn't tried to have him deported. Or maybe he's worried the Man of Steel would move to Russia...?

Snapshots Superman Songs Spillover (#2)

We closed Monday's collection of Superman songs with a track by Cinerama. Comic book fan David Gedge also used the name of the most bizarre Superman foe as the title of his other band's second album: Bizarro by The Wedding Present. Sadly, he never wrote a song about Bizarro... but these guys did...

The Monochrome Set - Mr. Bizarro

And this isn't too far off...

Straw - Weird Superman

All of which brings us to another post of songs featuring the Man of Steel...

Meat Loaf - Man of Steel

...and his friends and foes. Starting with one for Brian!

Tullycraft - Superboy & Supergirl

Actually, Supergirl appears to be far more popular with songwriters than her young male counterpart... who'd have thought it?

Donovan - Superlungs, My Supergirl

Johnny Cougar - Supergirl

Reamonn - Supergirl

Kate Miller-Heidke - Supergirl

The Fugs - Supergirl

The Troggs - Supergirl

(That cover's from the 90s, when mullets were big.)

When he's not being Superman, Kal El goes by another name, that of mild-mannered investigative reporter...

Klark Kent - Don't Care

That's not how he spells it.

Klark Kent was an alias for Stewart Copeland of The Police, recording a song that Sting didn't want for the day job. John says, "Stewart Copeland’s debut album Klark Kent was a belter."

Clark Kent works for a newspaper called The Daily Planet. On Saturday we featured a song by the title by Arthur Lee & Love. Here's another one...

Mark Hollis - The Daily Planet

And that's where Superman met the love of his life...

The Flys - Lois Lane

Farrah - Lois Lane

Weird coincidence department: all the bands I could find who wrote a song about Lois Lane (along with Sunday's Franz Ferdinand) began with the letter F.

But Lois wasn't Clark's first love though. That title would go to...

Rouge Pompier - Lana Lang

And he even had a fling with a mermaid once. Her name? Lori Lemaris. Can you spot a pattern here?

Not everybody with the initials LL loves Superman though. Let's not forget his arch enemy, Lex Luthor, a man who's jealousy of Superman might yet be explained that nobody has ever written a decent pop song in his honour...

Elvis Costello - Dr. Luther's Assistant

That was the best I could come up with, with the wrong spelling... and he's not even a doctor! No wonder he's such a bitter, twisted sociopath...

Luthor isn't Superman's only foe. We mentioned Bizarro earlier, and Braniac earlier in the week. Then there's the Kryptonian supervillain memorably played by Terence Stamp in Superman 2, General Zod...

Billy Talent - Kingdom Of Zod

And let's not forget the badguy who killed Superman back in 1992...

The Shirelles - Doomsday

Evelyn Thomas - Doomsday

Final question for today... what do you get if you put all of Superman's worst foes together in the same room?

The Superman Revenge Squad?

That'd be a good name for a band, don't you think?

Are we done with this now?

Not quite yet...

Snapshots Superman Songs Spillover (#1)

I saw the new Superman film.

I loved it.

But who cares what I think. Here are some more tunes!

When it came to compiling a post about Superman songs, there were hundreds to choose from, so a Spillover seemed inevitable. Starting with a couple which would have made this weekend's link far too obvious. From the sublime...

Laurie Anderson - O Superman

...to the ridiculous...

Black Lace - Superman

...or maybe that should have been the other way round?

Here's another one which would have been a giveaway...

Donovan - Sunshine Superman

Not to be confused with this, a little later in the day...

Dio - Sunset Superman

And then there was this, not actually a song about Clark Kent... but another, real life Superman...

Johnny Wakelin - Black Superman (Muhammad Ali)

It's amazing how many songs there are with "Superman" as their sole title. We featured quite a few yesterday, but here's a load more...

Alison McCallum - Superman

Eminem - Superman

Dan Bern - Superman

The Ides Of March - Superman

Richard Caiton - Superman

Barton Carroll - Superman

Les Variations - Superman Superman

So good they said it twice!

Excelsior - Superman

Robyn Hitchcock - Superman

Scouting For Girls - Superman

Attempted Moustache - Superman

I wish I could have found a picture of Attempted Moustache - they would definitely have made it into Snapshots this weekend.

Lazlo Bane - Superman

That one was the theme tune to the sitcom Scrubs, if you remember that.

If not, maybe you remember the time Babs wore a Superman shirt.

Barbra Streisand - Superman

And she's not the only Babs with a thing for the Man of Steel...

Raw Soul featuring Barbara Stant - Superman

One final offering today, from confirmed comic book fan David Gedge...

...but we're not done yet. There will be more Superman Songs later in the week.

Celebrity Jukebox #91: Astrud Gilberto

Tall and tanned and young and lovely,
The girl from Ipanema goes walking.
And when she passes, each one she passes goes, ‘ahhh’.

So go the English lyrics to “Garota de Ipanema”, the second most recorded song in popular music (after bloody "Scrambled Eggs"). The woman who sang those lyrics on the version that became an international hit was Astrud Gilberto.  Jazz saxophonist Stan Getz, who also played on the track, made enough money from that record to buy a 23 room mansion. Astrud got $120.

Astrud Gilberto passed away earlier this week. Here are some tunes to pay tribute, starting with a song that owes quite a debt to the track above...

To Astrud Gilberto tunes
We made love in the afternoon
Then strolled down the Champs Elysees
Sharing a warm baguette
Coffee with anisette
We kissed in the Metro
In love, very retro

We're together again, by the Seine,
Samba Blue

Another very close tribute comes from Roxy Music's Big Phil, and vocalist Ana Maria Velez. I hope she got more than 120 bucks.

We were slow dancing
To the voice of Astrud
That's when you undid
My secret heart

Are we taking a risk
Do we face abyss
Is the mystery of love around
Is it safer to say
We got carried away
By Astrud

Odd Nordstoga is a Norwegian folk singer. He's the same age as me, but looking at him, I reckon there's a portrait in his attic that's rotting to pieces.

Melankoliens avenyar
Der var eg heime ein gong
Eg trudde alt det vakre
Som Astrud Gilberto song
Med Marty Paich sitt orkester i 1965
Og diktarens ord kom føre meg
Du skal aldri komme hjem

It translates, very roughly, and rather wonderfully, thus...

Avenue of Melancholy
I was at home there once
I thought everything was beautiful
Like Astrud Gilberto song
With Marty Paich's orchestra in 1965
And the poet's words came to lead me
You will never come home

Here's another folkie. One you may be a little more familiar with...

When I hear Astrud
Jasmine fills the air

I don't know anything about the Fay Hallam Trinity, but I liked this for what it was...

But this was my favourite. You may remember Basia, originally the singer with 80s band Matt Bianco, before she branched out on her own. Here she is on the Johnny Carson show, with a song from her hit 1987 album Time & Tide...

Nobody knows where she came from
The tall-and-tanned-young-and-lovely girl
With a voice as light as air
Nobody knows but no one cares
'Cause everybody loves her

Finally, because because, here's Astrud with George. 'Nuff said.

Saturday Snapshots #180 - A Top Ten Sand Songs

If you're stuck in the House again this Sunday morning, here's yesterday's Snapshot answers. Don't be Laurie if you didn't get them all...

A TOP TEN SAND SONGS

10. Imaginary compilation album gets weighty.

As anyone who follows The Vinyl Villain will know, an Imaginary Compilation Album is an ICA. A heavy one would be a Metal-ICA.

Metallica - Enter Sandman

Still not a patch on this version...

9. USA, avenge NZ!

It was, of course, an anagram.

Suzanne Vega - Song of Sand

8. Fair lady leaves the Queen in the company of two killers.

My Fair Lady was Eliza Doolittle.

The Queen is Elizabeth,

If Eliza left the Queen, all that would be left is Beth.

The two killers were Dennis Nilsen & Mark David Chapman.

7. Where to get a good kebab.

From the doner van, of course!

6. Done to spells, lines, eyes and shadows.

You cast spells, cast lines, cast your eyes and cast shadows.

5. It's easier to get down on one knee when you're not so old.

It's easier to kneel when you're young.

4. Kick to restart - amazing!

A free kick, taken to restart a football game, could be a corner. An amazing one would be...

3. Sliced ballerina.

An anagram for the wonderful...

2. Eponymously big.

Or you could have had...

1. Central arrears.

Core debts.

More Snapshots for you (and Hugh) next week...
