Namesakes #153: The Faces

George is back... and it's time for him to Face the music!

There really can be no argument about the best band or best track  this week. But what I hope is that at least one of the other Faces can provide at the very least an acceptable tune.  For me that’s one aspect of the series that attracts - an obscure  namesake of a famous band that produced a great song.  And that might happen here. We shall see.

THE FACES #1

As is so often the case in this series, here’s a band who are described as a garage band. These Faces, from Germany, are more of 60s beat/r&b group...

That’s a version of a Bobby “Blue” Bland song (from the Two Steps From The Blues album, an album you all have, I’m sure).

THE FACES #2

Some Nigerian rock-funk-soul next...

I was going to embarrass myself by making a comment about Fela Kuti possibly being an inspiration or a mentor to this band,  but I suspect another reader would make me appear a bit of a fool (and I can do that myself without needing help from anyone else).

THE FACES #3

So far so good, well, so far no load-of-old-bobbins. But wait! It’s “electronic house” from 1993...

THE FACES #4

1970's Greek rock now, and a song that translates as Lover of The Bayou (and I did not know there were bayous in Greece, but I know very little about that country, so maybe there are).

THE FACES #5

USA sub-Four Seasons vocal group time now (and these kind of groups seem to always feature in every Namesake)...

Mercifully brief at 1 min 25 seconds.

(I dunno - I quite liked that one.)

THE FACES #6

Experimental indie time, and one not for the faint-hearted...

I can hear a Larks’-Tongues-In-Aspic influence in that i.e. No Bad Thing.

THE FACES #7

India now, and one that belongs to the RLOOB file...

(That's Right Load Of Old Bobbins for any new readers. Like this feature will ever have new readers.)

FACES #8

I almost excluded this penultimate one, as the artiste styles themselves Faces i.e. no definite article (this should always be allowed), and after you hear it maybe you’d wished I’d done so...

THE FACES #9

And finally, from the majestic “A nod’s as good as a wink…” album...

So 9 sets of Faces to inspect. Thanks to Rol for posting.

And thank you to George for keeping this feature afloat throughout the summer. You can go back to your hammock now, old pal.
