The Neverending Top Ten #1.1: Chicken Payback

After three days last week when both nursery and pre-school were closed due to the snow, and I was left to handle entertaining a hyperactive 4 year old while his mum tried to carry on working (from home) as normal... followed by a busy weekend that featured two kids' birthday parties and even more snow... we were all ready for the glorious return to normality that today would bring.

Until, late Sunday afternoon, we noticed the spots...

Chickenpox.

Meaning Sam can't be around other kids for at least another week... possibly two. And his already stressed-to-the-gills parents are both going to have to take more time off work to look after him while he recovers. You love 'em dearly, but sometimes it's hard, this parenting malarkey...

Saturday Snapshots #22 - The Answers

You can go your own way towards working out these answers... or just wait for the Sunday explanations.

10. Chuck Berry loses a buck and gets mad. Put on some James Brown to calm him down.

Ch___ _erry goes Wild.

Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music

The Swede got this. Cherry and Swede pie anyone?

9. Spherical altocumulus.

Altocumulus look like this...

The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds

Well done, Chris.

8. Get your shoes polished where Arthur Lee lives.

Arthur Lee would live in...

The House of Love - Shine On

Lynchie's shoes ares sparkling.

7. Michael makes my mouth water with his spongy biscuits.

Ladyfingers look like this...

Luscious Jackson - Ladyfingers

Brian enjoyed this week's early start and munched on a couple of Ladyfingers before bed. I remember when I used to be able to stay up till 11.30 on a Friday night.

6. Alfred's prizewinner wakes up Saint Peter.

That is a very young Robert Zimmerman, the future Nobel Prizewinner. This was going to be this week's Number One until I realised the original isn't available on youtube! Still, it is pretty obscurem I guess. Here's a passable live version...

Bob Dylan - Knocking On Heaven's Door

The Swede recognised cute lil' Bob.

5. Voices from space enjoy post-noon nookie.

The Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon Delight

Brian stole this from Alyson. We all know this should have been hers!

4. Genuine American actress has a good soak in Finsbury Park.

The Real Tuesday Weld - Bathtime In Clerkenwell

Happy to see The Swede recognise these guys, even though it took him a bit to get the right song.

If you've never heard Bathtime In Clerkenwell, please give it your ears for a couple of minutes. I can guarantee it won't sound anything like you expect... and if it doesn't make you grin, I'd check your smile at the doc's.

3. The gorgeous breadmaker chooses a naïve, shrunken crone.

George Baker Selection - Little Green Bag

Lynchie & Chris teamed up for this one.

2. Unlocking your rental causes a commotion in the dairy.

To unlock your rental, you'd need a Key to the Lease.

Kelis - Milkshake

Much puzzlement over this masked marvel, though Alyson got it in the end. She almost loses her mark for calling it "that awful milkshake song" though. Surely this is a female empowerment anthem?

1. Complete the marathon with Tracy and Bette.

Spencer Tracy & Bette Davis...

(Doesn't Stevie Winwood look young?)

Brian bagged this one early doors... making it a 3-all draw between him and The Swede as this week's joint winners.

I'll try to make them a bit harder next week...

Yesterday's Next Big Thing #2: Campag Velocet

"The best new band in Britain," said the NME, often a kiss of death... and it certainly seemed to be for Campag Velocet who disappeared shortly after the release of their debut album in 1999.

"Bunch of pretentious arses," appears to have been the verdict of the record buying public, and with song titles including 'Sauntry Sly Chic', 'Cacophonous Bubblegum', and their biggest "hit" (Number #75 with a bullet), Drencrom [Velocet Synthmesc]... well, it's hard to argue with that assessment.

Still, I did take rather a fancy to the title track of that album, Bon Chic Bon Genre. I've no idea why, because listening back now, I'm not entirely convinced it wasn't utter guff. Still, I was young (well, 27) and stupid (no change there). Let's give it one more spin for old time's sake...

Apparently Campag Velocet released their second (and final) album It's Beyond Our Control in 2004 on Pointy Records "to mixed reviews". By then, even the NME had given up on them.

Ten Great Opening Lines (Volume 2)

I do love a great opening line, yet it's been almost three years since I did Volume 1 of this particular Top Ten. So here's ten more cracking openers... see if you can identify them from the lyric alone. Click the link to see if you're right. (Except number one: you can have that for free.)

10. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot...

I play this to students as a good example of alliteration in pop songs. Often, the device doesn't work, but it stands out here. Their response?

"What's she singing?"

"Why's she got such a squeaky voice?"

Pff. Kids.

9. Couple in the next room bound to win a prize
They've been going at it all night long

That opening couplet always makes me smile. One day I will do a Top Ten Songs About Hotel Rooms With Very Thin Walls...

8. Bless my cotton socks, I'm in the news!

So much joy! And who says "bless my cotton socks" these days? You certainly wouldn't expect it from this bloke... or maybe you would.

7. Do you have the time to listen to me whine
About nothing and everything all at once?

Could very well be the strapline for this blog.

6. Libraries gave us power!

They did, didn't they? They weren't as good for socialising as the internet, but they stopped us from being so easily distracted.

And now they're closing them all down and the CD sections are long gone.

5. I guess I shoulda know
By the way she parked her car sideways
That it wouldn't last

"Women drivers, eh?"

I hope that comment can be taken as me being ironic, not sexist. I certainly don't think the writer of this song was sexist. Quite the opposite. I think his point was more: sometimes it's the little things that drive us apart.

4. I backed my car into a cop car the other day
Well, he just drove off - sometimes life's okay

"Men drivers, eh?"

(I can be as sexist as I want about men and not worry about it.)

3. Have you lost your love of life?
Too much apple pie!

Look, far be it from me to try and sway the voting on JC's ICA World Cup this week, but really... that's so clearly a better opening line than "This and that, they must be the same". (Although I'm guessing C will disagree.)

2. I was born in the wagon of a travelling show...

Weren't we all, love?

Most of us reach an age when we stop dressing like it though...

Mind you, I could do with a couple'a bottles of Doctor Good right now.

1. I hate the arsehole I become every time I'm with you

It's nowhere near the best song on the album, but it's the best opening line he ever wrote. I'm not keeping this one hidden...

Your suggestions for great opening lines will be gratefully received... and put into consideration for Volume 3.
