Snapshots #394: Musical Organs... but not the kind you play

Here's a famous organ player - Booker T. Yesterday, Ray Manzarek introduced our quiz. But neither of them played the kinds of organs you'll hear below...

15. Charles, could be another #4.

Charles Mansun would be in good company with the names listed in Clue 4.

Mansun - She Makes My Nose Bleed

Or even...

Mansun - Ski Jump Nose

And yes, your nose is an organ. Trust me, I'm a doctor.

14. McNulty, Bunk, Omar, Stringer Bell.

All characters from The Wire...

Wire - Kidney Bingos

13. Educating an Italian peacock.

Educating Rita. Pavone is Italian for peacock.

Rita Pavone - Heart

12. Home to Silvio Dante.

Silvio Dante was a character in The Sopranos, played by E Street Band member Stevie Van Zandt.

Townes Van Zandt - Lungs

11. Helps lyrics become untangled.

"Helps lyrics" was an anagram...

Cypress Hill - Insane In The Brain

10. Supreme Ruler.

Diana Ross - Muscles

The AI says, "Yes, individual muscles are considered organs because they are structures composed of different tissues working together to perform a specific function, like movement."

9. Satanism.

Bad Religion - Struck A Nerve

8. Retriever in both ears.

Stereo Labrador?

Stereolab - Spinal Column

7. Lee, Holloway and Russell enjoy making tables.

Three famous Brendas indulge in a bit of tabulation.

Brenda & the Tabulations - Right On The Tip Of My Tongue

6. Buffy.

Buffy was a Vampire... Slayer.

Slayer - Hardening Of The Arteries

That's got to be one for George's next mixtape.

5. She's a neat one... but pretty messed up.

"She's a neat one" was a rather obvious anagram

Sheena Easton - For Your Eyes Only

4. Jack, Peter, Jeffrey, John Wayne.

Jack The Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, Jeffrey Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy...

The Killers - Bones

3. Tin soldiers and Nixon coming... presumably for a game.

"Tin soldiers and Nixon coming" is the opening line of Ohio.

Ohio Players - Skin Tight

2. Invoice for the Mills... and Cupid's friends.

Bill Hayley Mills! Cupid was friends with Comet.

Bill Haley & His Comets - Rock The Joint

1. Subs.

The Replacements - Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out

In case you were wondering, here were the two I had left over...

I'll organ-ise more Snapshots next Saturday...

Saturday Snapshots #19: The Answers

Yes, that's Kylie. Deal with it.

By the way, I'm only going to explain the clues from now on if they're really obscure...

10. Home for mad spirits. Where's the brakes!?!

Soul Asylum - Runaway Train

First point to Charity Chic.

9. Smaller than a superstar collie, sighing at trucks.

Lassie was a superstar collie. A smaller Lassie would be Alessi.

Alessi - Oh, Lori

I knew Alyson would get this one. George was miffed!

8. Kinda like this blog... hardly a firecracker!

This blog is kinda like My Life Story. It's hardly a firecracker, is it?

My Life Story - You Don't Sparkle

As I compile these results, nobody has got this. I fully expect Martin to swoop in at the last minute and nab it.

UPDATE: Just before I was about to turn off the computer and go to bed (hey, listen, 9.30 is all I can manage on a Saturday night), my prediction came true. I knew I could count on you, Martin!

7. Beware of this (unabbreviated) spinning lady... she's coming for New York!

A Spinning Jenny, unabbreviated, would be Jennifer.

Beware is a warning.

Jennifer Warnes - First We Take Manhattan

Another point for CC.

6. Mental illness? Climb a mountain in the Med.

Cyprus Hill? Don't you know I'm loco?

Cypress Hill - Insane In The Brain

From Jennifer Warnes to Cypress Hill - CC gets much respect this week!

5. Art makes Hazlewood a prisoner for drinking sugary pop from Korea.

Art = Arthur.

Putting Hazlewood in prison would make him a Con-Lee.

Seoul is the capital of South Korea.

Do you like good music?

Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music

And another one for the Charity-meister! He obviously had three Shredded Wheat on Saturday morning.

4. Steve & Charlie chew it over.

Steve Strange.

Charlie Rich.

Cud - Rich & Strange

Yes, kids, this is what 1992 looked like.

1/2 a point to George, 1/2 a point to Rigid Digit.

3. Created to adore... and smooch.

Kiss (without their make-up!) - I Was Made For Loving You

C stole this one out from under Alyson.

2. Good for staying up and larging it on Saturday & Sunday.

Ahem. If you don't know what an Arab Strap is, you're probably better off not googling it.

Arab Strap - The First Big Weekend

General agreement that this must be The Alexander Brothers with Nobody's Child... a song I'd never heard before, but I can see why you might think I'd like it. Having watched the video, I reckon there's a distinct possibility Aiden & Malcolm posed for that photo with said brothers in mind.

It took my extra "Think Belle & Sebastian" clue to direct RD to the correct answer.

1. What Bond got LOADS.

Sometimes the clues just write themselves.

George took a couple of shots, but nailed his target in the end.

Congratulations to this week's undisputed champion: Charity Chic. Thanks, as always, for playing along.

Back next Saturday with ten more badly disguised "classics" from the depths of my music library...

My Top Ten Going Out Songs

"Do you want to go out with me?"

A question I never actually plucked up the courage to ask...

Special mention to This Charming Man, who would go out tonight but he hasn't got a stitch to wear.

10. Francis & The Lights - Going Out

According to Iffypedia, "Francis and the Lights is the stage name of American songwriter Francis Farewell Starlite."

So, let me get this straight... his real name is stagier than his stage name?

9. The Human League - The Stars Are Going Out

One of Louise's friends lives across the road from Phil Oakey. Fact!

8. Little Anthony & The Imperials - Going Out Of My Head

No. Indeed. They do not make them like this anymore.

7. Tom Waits - Goin' Out West
Well my friends think I'm ugly
I got a masculine face
Count yourself lucky, Tom. People say I look like a girl. A pretty ugly girl.

6. Kirsty MacColl - (I'm Going Out With An) 80 Year Old Millionaire
He won't last much longer if he keeps drinking gin
I filled up the bottle that's marked medicine
He says that he'll leave all his empire to me
And sitting on top is the best place to be
So don't get impatient now boys you must wait
We'll all have such fun when I own the estate
Britt's got her toy boys but I don't care
'Cos I'm going out with an 80 year old millionaire
Ah, Kirsty, how we miss you.

5. Spearmint - We're Going Out

Shirley Lee: Godlike Genius.
I know nothing seems to excite you anymore
I know it feels like you've got nothing to look forward to
But it's OK - everybody feels like that somethimes
It's just a phase we're going through, that's all

Put your coat on - we're going out!
4. Supergrass - Going Out

Any father's worst nightmare. Your daughter's going out on her first date, there's a knock at the door, and who should be standing there but one of the scruffy, long-haired muppets from Supergrass looking like they haven't had a bath since before the last Olympics. I'm glad we're having a boy...

3. Younger Younger 28s - We're Going Out
Lipstick, cigarette, packet of three... we're going out.
YY28s: should have been massive.

2. Cypress Hill - Ain't Goin' Out Like That

I suspect the definition of "going out" in this song has little to do with dinner and a movie.

Wins many extra points, however, for the line...
Outlaw, I'll kick ya like Billy Ray... Cypress... Hill
1. Joe Jackson - Is She Really Going Out With Him?

Can we all be upstanding for one of the greatest opening lyrics in the history of pop...?
Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street...

Which one would you go out with?
