Fun Fact Friday #6: If I Had Words...

Here's another Friday brainteaser / time-waster for you, based on a quiz I compiled at work. It's about words from other languages... words we don't have a direct translation for in English, but we really ought to get one. Because each of these is an excellent word, and would be very useful.

What do these words mean in English?

Let's start with one that I'm sure Walter will be familiar with...

5. What does the Japanese phrase “Age-otori” mean in English?

A) Looking worse after a haircut.
B) Feeling really old when you enter a nightclub.
C) Missing the last bus and having to walk home in the rain.

6. What does the Finnish word “Hyppytyynytyydytys” mean in English?

A) Sleeping all through Sunday after a hectic Saturday night.
B) The pleasure derived from sitting or bouncing on a springy cushion.
C) Sneezing three times in a row.

7. What does the Hawaiian word “Akihi” mean in English?

A) When you wake up in the morning and you’re not sure where you are.
B) When you go to another room, then can’t remember what you went there for.
C) When you ask someone for directions, walk away, then immediately forget what they said.

8. What does the Easter Island word “Tingo” mean in English?

A) The feeling you get when you suck on a lemon.
B) Borrowing items from a neighbour and not returning them, gradually stealing everything they own.
C) The smell that comes from someone who has fallen into a dung heap.

9. What does the Tagalog word “Gigil” mean in English? (Tagalog is the national language of the Philippines.)

A) The feeling you get when you see something unbearably cute and want to squeeze it.
B) The feeling you get when you’ve climbed a huge mountain and immediately want to go back down.

Saturday Snapshots #41 - The Answers

Not that I'm a big Oasis fan, but I couldn't give Liam a header without then giving one to his big brother. You know how they squabble.

Don't Look Back In Anger if you didn't get any of these right. Just Roll With It... it was basically a three horse race yesterday, with Lynchie clinching it by a nose (1/2 a point for #3). Well done to C for getting #10 though.

10. Me. Or my brother. Dumping prison coffee.

I am the Son Of My Father. So is my brother.

Prison coffee is made from chicory. A dump is a tip.

Chicory Tip - Son Of My Father

9. Come on, sleepy! Have a flat white.

Matt paint is rather flat. Bianco is white.

Matt Bianco - Get Out Of Your Lazy Bed

8. Don't let your small part get you down.

A small part is a cameo. (Larry Blackmon never had to worry about that.)

If you're not down, you're up.

Cameo - Word Up!

7. Elsie Jerkin CEO Charles V.

Anagram time, folks! Elsie Jerkin CEO is Rickie Lee Jones.

Charles V would be Chuck E because E is the 5th letter of the alphabet.

Rickie Lee Jones - Chuck E.'s In Love

6. Fraudulent freaks.

Frauds = charlatans.

Freaks = weirdoes.

(Took me ages to find a photo in which Tim Burgess's hair wasn't a giveaway.)

The Charlatans - Weirdo

5. Devout tripping.

Work this one out yourself.

Journey - Don't Stop Believing

4. Encourage humanity to score in sneakers.

Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks

3. Catch the medal for the best Yorkshire harp at the station.

A rosette is a kind of medal.

The Yorkshire harp would be T'harp.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe - This Train

2. Lids A or B or C. Could also be scarlet.

Lids are what go on top of boxes.

A, B and C are letters. So was The Scarlet Letter.

The Box Tops - The Letter

1. A male composer and a painter get into high gear - and that's just the beginning!

Bach was a composer. A man is male. Turner was a painter. High gear is overdrive.

Let's ROCK!

Don't Go Away. Saturday Snapshots will be back next week. Try to keep off the Cigarettes and Alcohol until then...

My Top Ten Alligator Songs

An album with an alligator on the cover.

A much better album without an alligator on the cover.

As promised, here is the inevitable follow-up to My Top Ten Crocodile Songs... in a snap!

Be warned... though there were lots of alligator songs in my tomb of tunes... there weren't very many great ones.

10. Bill Haley & The Comets - See You Later, Alligator

Buddy Holly. Chuck Berry. Gene Vincent. Eddie Cochran. Fats Domino. The Everly Brothers. Jerry Lee Lewis. Etc. Etc. Etc.

I love them all.

Never quite got Bill Haley though. He never felt rock 'n' roll enough for me. (Ironic, considering a lot of people call his biggest hit 'the first rock 'n' roll record'.)

9. REM - Alligator Aviator Autopilot Antimatter

If you ever wondered why REM called it a day, this video offers ample evidence. From their final album, for good reason.

As for alligator alliteration, Carole King does a better job on Alligators All Around.

8. Foxboro Hot Tubs - Alligator

What Green Day did on their day off. Pretended to be The Who.

7. Paul Gilbert - Alligator Farm

This really rocks. You might enjoy it. (So I won't tell you it's by the bloke who used to be in Mr. Big.)

6. Curve - Alligators Getting Up

Sounds a bit like a rejected Bond theme. Maybe Curve were thinking of remaking Live & Let Die? (i.e. The One With Alligators. Or Crocodiles. Don't be pedantic.)

5. Chely Wright - Alligator Purse

The alligator version of Crocodile Shoes. Only better.

4. Screamin' Jay Hawkins - Alligator Wine

Genuinely scary.

3. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Gator On The Lawn

Tom does his best Elvis shuffle because every other day he's got a gator on his lawn.

2. ZZ Top - Alley-Gator

Sounds like most  other ZZ Top songs you've ever heard, only twice as fuzzy. Therefore it's amazing. (At least in the context of this list.)

1. Cameo - Alligator Woman / Lionel Ritchie - Night Train (Smooth Alligator)

Look, I know this particular Top Ten hasn't been my finest moment. There are some top notch artists on this countdown, but they've all done far better things in their careers, and none of the songs featured today can hold a candle to last week's Crocodile post. But I promised an alligator follow-up, and so I felt contractually obliged. Hence this two-fer-one Number One of 80s soul shudders which I'm sure will make most of you run for the hills, but I actually think are quite fun in a very much of-their-time sort of way.

Look, it was either this or Paul McCartney and Mark Ronson. Believe me, you got off lightly.

Maybe I missed the lost classic alligator song that's lurking in your swamp. If so, do tell...
