Grumpy Old Men Songs #15: You Can't Go Back

I realise that my excitement over a new Del Amitri album probably won't be echoed by the majority of the blogosphere, but the prospect of their first album in 19 years is a glimmer of light amid the endless darkness.

I have a lot of time for Justin Currie. He's a romantic misanthrope. Or a misanthropic romantic. I know how that feels. And he's long been the very definition of a Grumpy Old Man, all the way back to the band's colossally cynical breakthrough hit...

Currie has been far from silent over the past two decades, ploughing his own furrow with some excellent solo albums, and very entertaining live shows. And the romisantichropy has been ever-present...

Now he's got the band back together though, and from what I've heard, they're sounding as good as they ever did.

As for the Grumpy Old Man Syndrome... well, check this out!

  1. No Surrender is a stunning song - a terrific rant from Justin
He once tried to push in front of me while I was trying to get served in the Halt Bar in Glagow. He was not successful.
Nothing Ever Happens is also a terrific song.
Other that those two they are a bit meh

    1. Two points there, CC, and I can't help you with the first one, other than to say if I held a grudge against everyone who ever pushed in front of me at the bar, I'd hate the whole human race.

      Oh, wait...

Secondly, and I rarely get drawn into meh arguments, since each to their own and all that, but I always scratch my head at that reaction to Del Amitri while bands such as Teenage Fanclub get continually lauded. I mean, I've got nothing against the Fannies, I enjoy their tunes, but they have far less to say for themselves than Justin.

Bah. I just did that thing I swore off doing anymore. I think it was the meh. Sorry.

  2. The last Del Amitri album I bought was the self-titled debut in the mid-'80s. Even with a 19-year gap in there, I still have quite a bit of catching up to do. Will check out these clips.

    3. No need - I was enjoying the banter.
      It's all about opinions
