Namesakes #105: Jigsaw

This week's Namesakes offers a puzzle with many pieces. Will they all fit together?

Watch out for this guy. I don't think he made any records, but if he did, they'd be Sawful.

JIGSAW #1

Out of the ruins of The Mighty Avengers (who will feature here soon), as far back as 1966, came Coventry's answer to why we send people to Coventry.

Iffypedia tells us that, "Jigsaw became known for raucous live shows with drum kits set on fire, explosions, fire-eating, and occasional property damage." Further investigation led me to discover that the venue of one Jigsaw gig was damaged after a member of the band leapt of the stage and accidentally smashed his head through the low suspended ceiling. I'm guessing this was during the performance of their biggest hit from 1975...

Jigsaw - Sky High

JIGSAW #2

Forming in 1968, Melbourne's Jigsaw still managed to get the Sky High heroes above to change their name to The British Jigsaw when touring Oz. This Jigsaw enjoyed much chart success in their native land, including a Number One with a cover of Christie's Yellow River. However, this must surely be their finest hour...

Jigsaw - Albert The Albatross

JIGSAW #3

Dutch rock 'n roll band active from 1969-1973, although they only released two singles. The one that everyone in the Netherlands remembers is about a girl "napping on the sidewalk". Only their b-sides were sung in English...

Jigsaw - Japie (Ligt Te Dutten Op De Stoep)

JIG-SAW #4

Finnish rock band who released one album in 1975, then opened a chip shop.

Jig-Saw - Superkingi

JIGSAW #5

Swiss Jazz-Prog from 1979. I couldn't find an individual song on the tube of you and was about to link to their entire debut album, Puzzle... until the camp of bands came to our rescue...

Jigsaw - Fasten Seat Belts

JIG SAW #6

Jamaican reggae star from 1991...

Jig Saw - Girl Brag & Show Off

JIGSAW #7

Ska-punk band from Orange County, California in 1997...

Jigsaw - Buzzkill

JIGSAW #8

Meanwhile, up in Canada that very same year...

Jigsaw - Wearing The Reconstruction

JIGSAW #9

The sound of Baggy Bukaddor, Oliver Kleine-Weischede, Siggi Wafzig from 2002. This is German progressive house, apparently. Give me Albert The Albatross any day of the week.

Jigsaw - Zodiac

JIGSAW #10

Australian jazz / blues / soul combo from 2004, also known as The Jigsaw Collective...

Jigsaw - Bollero For Doris

JIGSAW #11

This one endeared itself to me because it comes from a 2006 Spanish punk compilation called "Politicians, Fucking Idiots! Vol. 2" on Eating Shit Records. I mean, come on, you've got to give them points for that.

Jigsaw - Raindrops

JIGSAW #12

Heavy German Metal from 2008...

Jigsaw - Idle Kills

A JIGSAW #13

I'm going to argue for this one. If I allow the definite article to intrude on bandnames, I must also allow for the indefinite article. Plus, these guys are from Portugal, which might keep George happy, and appear to have been listening to Nick Cave, which keeps me happy. This is how they sounded in 2011...

a Jigsaw - The Strangest Friend

JIGSAW #14

High octane indie guitar music from Paris circa 2013. I quite like this one, perhaps because I often get rejected on a Monday morning.

Jigsaw - Monday Morning Rejection

JIGSAW #15

And now for a nice bit of murder rap from Yuba City, California in 2014. You'll never get a proper job if you keep that up.

Jigsaw - Mutants

JIGSAW #16

How about a nice Bordeaux? This song, from 2020, is called Aggression. And it certainly fits the title.

Jigsaw - Aggression

JIGSAW #17

Finally... Ooh, they're from Nashville! This'll be worth a listen...

Or not, as the case may be. One of those METAL bands where the singer must have a permanent sore throat (just like the previous guy, actually). Here they are in 2022, pre-lozenge.

Jigsaw - Papa Legba

Other Jigsaws were to be found on discogs, but they all had missing pieces.
