Hot 100 Countdown #82

Last week, unable to find a decent song with 83 in the title, I had to go searching lyrics... and came up with ten great lyrical mentions.

This week, I considered doing the same, and there were plenty to choose from... not least of which being Asia - Heat of the Moment, as suggested by Rigid Digit.

However, I didn't need to do that in the end, as there were a number of tracks in my collection that featured 82 in the title...

The Shins - Fall of '82

Danielle Dax - Big Blue '82'

Fun Boy Three - Summer of '82

All good songs... but none of them in the same class as this. From his first album, which very few people bought... at least until after his third album. Back when he was just a Dylanesque folk singer, not the future of rock 'n' roll...

I still love it.

81 next week. What have you got for me?

  1. Guessing we're allowed years now as long as they are not remix years. How about Joanna Newson - '81?

1812 Overture also sprang to mind but like with that Mining Disaster song straddled by 2 other numbers.

    1. Joanna Newsome is worth a listen. 182 is strictly for when I start my year by year chronicle of time...

  2. Massively embarrassed not to have come up with 'Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street'. My Bruce credentials are in tatters. Please don't tell anyone. Along the same lines, for next week I've got '81st Street' by Gato Barbieri & Dollar Brand.
Has anyone suggested 'New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84)' by Simple Minds at any time over the past three weeks?

  3. Even more embarrassed as I listened to that album from Simple Minds just last week!

  4. As I have mentioned it for the last 3 weeks, I feel compelled to re-suggest Simple Minds - New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84)
(Go on, you know you want to)

    A lyrical 81 (and it's a year too):
    Marillion - White Feather

When I hit the streets back in '81
Found a heart in the gutter and a poet's crown
I felt barbed wire kisses and icicle tears
Where have I been for all these years?

    1. You can all keep banging on about Simple Minds, but it's very unlikey to happen. Marillion would at least be in with a chance.

  5. So my parents sometimes used to go down to the local Jazz Club. Niiiice. Not my cup of tea but I wonder if they ever played Miles Davis' Eighty-One there? Or if you will here?!

  6. I don't know a song with 81 in the title though interestingly one of my earliest music memories is the Roger Whitaker lyric:

"I met a man who had a dream he'd had since he was twenty,
I met that man when he was 81" (from the 70s song New World in the Morning)

  7. Best described as "East Coast Mo-townish" is the 1964 single "The 81" by Candy & The Kisses...on the Cameo label
